We sat down with Jeff to discuss the fitting process.
Q&A
HOW DOES A MODERN GOLF FITTING HELP GOLFERS IMPROVE?
A fitting is critical to a player improving their skill level and ultimately getting more enjoyment out of the game. Every level of player can benefit from the fitting process from beginner to professional. Golf is a game of managing mis-hits and building confidence. And once you have been properly fit, you then have the confidence to reduce the mis-hits and ultimately lower your scores. If you wonder if you should get fit, ask yourself, would you run a marathon in shoes that didn’t fit?
WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THE FITTING PROCESS?
We start out with a detailed specifications spreadsheet where we record the specs of your current clubs. While we are doing this we go through a casual interview with the customer to help learn more about their game and what some of their goals for their fitting session will be. From there, we will go to our TrackMan equipped hitting bays and work through various combinations of heads and shafts from our matrix that features over 30,000 different options to provide the most consistent performance. As mentioned, we use TrackMan 4 which has Dual Radar Technology to obtain maximum data quality and increased pick up rates. This allows us to really fine-tune your equipment to your golf swing and deliver maximum performance from every club in your bag.
DOES BEING FIT COST MORE?
The combined years of fitting experience across all Modern Golf locations is in the upper hundreds and the consensus remains that properly fitted clubs will provide more lasting enjoyment and performance. This is why we believe every golfer, no matter their skill level, should be fit when purchasing their equipment, and that’s why when you spend over $500 at any of our Modern Golf locations your fitting fee is waived – we have the same prices and provide a better fit.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT FITTING?
I enjoy the puzzle of matching the club to the player. Everyone has their own unique style and swing, and it’s the job of the fitter to figure out what works best for the player. I will commonly do four driver or iron fittings in one day with four similar swing speed/ability players and end up with four completely different results. I’m often asked questions like “what’s the best selling iron?” or “what’s the most popular driver?” But we are brand agnostic and performance driven. The best is different for every golfer and we simply want to find the the best combination for you. Apart from that, I also really enjoy reading all the positive feedback, social media posts and emails we get telling us how someone has improved and would recommend us to others, that’s the way we have built such a high quality reputation within the industry and beyond.
HOW MANY FITS HAVE YOU COMPLETED IN YOUR CAREER?
After more than 20 years as a fitter it’s hard to count. Just off the top of my head I average about 20 fitting sessions per week all year-round. So I’d say I’ve done over 5,000 fittings in my five years with Modern Golf and over my entire career I’d estimate the total to be over 20,000 fittings.
HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN GOLF ALLOW YOU TO FIT BETTER?
Having worked for decades as a custom golf club fitter it has given me the experience and deep knowledge of the connection between equipment and the needs of the player. I maintain my skill set through continued education and training from the manufacturers and achieving master level club fitting certification from all of the brands that we carry. With a year-round product cycle, the learning never stops and that is one of the best parts of what we do.
